How to play the river quiz
A free rivers of the world quiz with 400+ real rivers from 145 countries, from the Nile and the Amazon to rivers only locals know.
Start playingThree steps
Study the glowing river on the 3D globe: where it starts, how it bends and where it meets the sea or a lake. Drag to turn the globe, scroll or pinch to zoom, and switch on 3D relief to see the mountains around it.
Type its name. Common alternative names count, and you can guess as often as you like. Once you name it, the camera circles the river in 3D and you get a photo and facts about it.
Stuck? Open up to three clues: where it flows, a place on its course (a city on its banks shown on the globe, a tributary or its countries) and how its name starts. Each clue lowers the XP for that river. You can also play a river later or show the answer.
Which rivers are in the game?
Over 400 rivers from 145 countries: up to the five longest rivers of each country. Easy rounds start with the longest river of a country, such as the Nile, the Amazon, the Yangtze, the Mekong, the Mississippi or the Volga. Medium and hard rounds move on to shorter rivers, where real map knowledge pays off.
Where the maps and facts come from
River courses and country borders come from Natural Earth, the satellite relief from NASA Blue Marble and the elevation for 3D relief from Mapterhorn. Lengths, countries and river mouths come from Wikidata. The photo after each answer comes from Wikimedia Commons and always names its author and licence. Nothing is drawn by hand.
