How much has been spent on Alqueva Dam so far?
Alqueva Dam is a 96-metre double-curvature concrete arch dam across the Guadiana between Moura and Portel in southern Portugal. It is the storage centrepiece of the wider Alqueva Multipurpose Project, but EDIA accounts for the dam, hydroelectric station and irrigation networks as separate investment programmes. The gates closed on 8 February 2002, beginning reservoir filling; the 4.15-billion-cubic-metre reservoir first reached its full level in 2010. Alqueva I entered production in 2004, and the expanded pumped-storage complex now has 520 MW of installed generating capacity. EDIA's 2022 accounts report EUR 609.96 million of cumulative investment in the dam programme and EUR 130.94 million separately for the hydroelectric station.
