How much did Atat?rk Dam cost to build?
Atat?rk Dam is a rock-fill dam and hydropower complex on the Euphrates in southeastern Turkey, built as a major part of the Southeastern Anatolia Project. Construction began in 1983, reservoir filling started in January 1990, and the dam opened on 25 July 1992 with its first generating unit. Its eighth main turbine reached service in 1994. The eight main turbines have a combined 2,400 MW rating; the plant operator's 2,405 MW figure includes a 5 MW auxiliary unit. The embankment is 169 metres high measured from the riverbed, or 184 metres from its foundation, and its crest is 1,664 metres long. A consortium member lists a USD 1.18164 billion construction contract at 1983 prices; another original-contractor account later described the dam-and-power-plant project as costing approximately USD 1.25 billion without specifying a price year.
