How much did 500 Fifth Avenue cost to build?

500 Fifth Avenue is a 697-foot (212.5 m) Art Deco office tower at Fifth Avenue and West 42nd Street in Midtown Manhattan. Shreve, Lamb & Harmon designed it for developer Walter J. Salmon; excavation began in February 1930, the general contract was completed in January 1931 and the building opened that March. New York City's landmark report records a $4 million application-stage project estimate and about 450,000 square feet of rentable office area. Its asymmetrical setbacks and efficient, light-filled floor plans responded directly to the 1916 zoning rules; the exterior became a New York City landmark in 2010.
