How much did 550 Madison Avenue cost to build?
550 Madison Avenue is the 37-story, pink-granite office tower that Philip Johnson and John Burgee designed as AT&T’s Midtown headquarters. Construction began in December 1978, staff first occupied the building in July 1983, and the work was completed in 1984. New York City’s landmark report records a final construction cost of more than $200 million after the project ran late and over budget. The 197.3-metre (647 ft) tower later served as Sony’s headquarters and underwent a separate preservation-led retrofit completed in 2022.
