How much did 875 North Michigan Avenue cost to build?
875 North Michigan Avenue, long known as the John Hancock Center, is a 100-story mixed-use tower on Chicago's Magnificent Mile. Designed by SOM architect Bruce Graham and structural engineer Fazlur Rahman Khan, its exposed X-braced tube made the tapered supertall both structurally efficient and unusually open inside. TIME reported a $95 million John Hancock Mutual investment as the first tenant moved in during 1969; SOM records a height of 1,127 feet, 2.8 million square feet of gross area, 703 rental units, and completion in 1970.
