How much does the upgrade of A66 Northern Trans-Pennine upgrade cost?

The A66 Northern Trans-Pennine project covers the 80-kilometre strategic corridor between M6 junction 40 at Penrith and A1(M) junction 53 at Scotch Corner. It will dual approximately 30 kilometres of remaining single carriageway across six sections, improve junctions and create a continuous two-lane route in each direction. Development consent was granted in March 2024 and government funding was confirmed in July 2025; National Highways remains in project development while the full construction programme and approved budget are finalised.
