How much did the first section of Almaty Metro cost to build?
Almaty Metro is Kazakhstan's first and only metro system. Work began on 7 September 1988, slowed sharply after the Soviet Union collapsed, and culminated in the opening of a seven-station, 8.56-kilometre first section on 1 December 2011. At a city briefing immediately before commissioning, officials reported that opening section at 165.9 billion tenge, compared with a revised construction estimate of 163.115 billion tenge earlier in 2011 and a 101 billion tenge programme figure published in 2005. Extensions to Sairan and Moskva opened in 2015, followed by Saryarka and Bauyrzhan Momyshuly in 2022; the operating line now has 11 stations and spans 13.4 kilometres. The system remains in service while further westward extensions are under construction or planning.
