How much did Branisko Tunnel cost to build?
Branisko is a 4,975-metre road tunnel on Slovakia's D1 motorway between Beharovce and Fricovce. Its single open tube carries traffic in both directions and opened to drivers on 29 June 2003. Work on the tunnel began in the 1990s; the 2023 operator was studying a second tube rather than reporting one already built. The original civil works, portal structures and tunnel technology appeared as separate cost lines in the Slovak Road Administration's 2004 report. A February 2003 parliamentary exchange cited an estimated total tunnel cost of 8.5 billion Slovak koruna; that historical forecast is not an audited final cost and does not include a future second tube. The operating tunnel has six emergency bays and 13 cross-passages to an escape gallery.
