How much did Bruce Highway cost to build?
The Bruce Highway is Queensland's main north-south road corridor, connecting the Brisbane area with Cairns through coastal regional centres. The Australian Government describes the route as 1,673 kilometres long; published route lengths differ as bypasses and end points change. There is no single meaningful construction price for a highway assembled and upgraded over many decades. The playable amount on this page is instead the AUD 9 billion Bruce Highway Targeted Safety Program, a separately defined package of safety and resilience works on priority sections north of Gympie. Federal and Queensland governments committed AUD 7.2 billion and AUD 1.8 billion respectively. Work began in 2025 and the current delivery target is 2030. These programme figures are a budget and funding commitments, not a completed cost for building the entire highway.
