How much does Chūō Shinkansen cost?

The Chūō Shinkansen is the maglev line under construction by the Central Japan Railway Company (JR Central) between Shinagawa in Tokyo and Nagoya, mostly in tunnels, with construction approved in 2014, the 2027 opening abandoned after the Shizuoka section blocked work and a tentative opening of 2035 used for financial calculations. In a notice of 29 October 2025 JR Central forecast the total construction cost for the Shinagawa–Nagoya section at 11.0 trillion yen, about 4 trillion more than the 7.04 trillion yen budget of its construction implementation plan.
