What is the approved budget of Gospel Oak–Barking electrification?
The Gospel Oak to Barking railway has Victorian origins, but this cost record covers Network Rail's 2016–2018 electrification of the existing London Overground route, not its original construction or the later Barking Riverside extension. Network Rail described the upgrade as a £133 million investment in December 2016. In August 2017 it gave City A.M. a revised £171.9 million cost estimate after design and delivery delays; that estimate included compensation for disrupted services and is not an audited final outturn. The works installed overhead equipment across a route Network Rail described as 14 miles long, allowing longer four-car electric trains to replace two-car diesels. TfL reported work began on 6 June 2016, and Network Rail said the electrification was completed in its 2017–18 annual return. The photograph shows an electric train on the line in 2020.
