How much does Suburban Rail Loop East cost?

Suburban Rail Loop East is the first stage of Melbourne's Suburban Rail Loop: 26 km of twin tunnels with six new underground stations from Cheltenham (Southland) to Box Hill, with train services planned to start by 2035. The Victorian Auditor-General's report 'Delivering the Suburban Rail Loop' of 26 August 2026 says the government's publicly disclosed cost is up to A$34.5 billion and that the project is more likely than not to exceed it, possibly beyond A$36 billion. The Victorian Parliamentary Budget Office separately estimated in March 2024 that SRL East would cost A$84.1 billion nominal to build and operate from 2019 to 2084, which is a different measure.
