How much will it cost to seal the Western Australian section of the Tanami Road?
The Tanami Road is a 1,035 km road linking Alice Springs in the Northern Territory with Halls Creek in Western Australia, mostly unsealed gravel that is cut by wet-weather closures. It is being sealed in stages: the 313 km Western Australian section is a jointly funded Australian and WA government project reported in June 2023 at AUD 542.8 million, with the first 20 km near Halls Creek funded at AUD 34.2 million federal and AUD 8.55 million state in Main Roads' November 2021 update. Wikipedia records a federal commitment of AUD 235 million in January 2020 and more than AUD 250 million from WA in 2022; the Northern Territory section is a separate program.
