Tren Urbano is the single-line, 10.7-mile (17.2 km) rapid transit system of San Juan, Puerto Rico, with 16 stations, a vehicle maintenance facility and 74 rail cars, mostly elevated with a 1.1-mile tunnel. It was built by the Puerto Rico Highway and Transportation Authority with design-build contracts and a design-build-operate contract with Siemens; construction began in 1997 and service started in December 2004, over three years later than the July 2001 target, with paid service from 6 June 2005. The FHWA project profile gives the total cost as USD 2,250 million, almost double the original USD 1.25 billion estimate, while the FTA's 2007 study cited by Wikipedia gives USD 2.28 billion.
