The West Side Elevated Highway, known as the Miller Highway, was an elevated road along Manhattan's Hudson River waterfront from the Battery to 72nd Street, built in sections between 1929 and 1951 after the Board of Estimate approved Julius Miller's plan in June 1926 at $13.5 million, up from $11 million. The first section opened on 13 November 1930 and the Battery Underpass section on 10 April 1951; a stretch collapsed on 15 December 1973 and the structure was demolished between 1977 and 1989.
