How much did Astrodome cost to build?
Houston's Astrodome was the first fully enclosed, air-conditioned multipurpose stadium designed for both baseball and football. Although officials held a ceremonial groundbreaking on 3 January 1962, work on the stadium structure began on 18 March 1963. The 642-foot clear-span dome and original 45,772-seat baseball layout opened to spectators on 9 April 1965 for an Astros exhibition against the New York Yankees. Contemporary retrospective reporting by the Astros puts the county-funded venue at about USD 35 million; later renovations, off-site works and annual upkeep are different costs. The completed stadium eventually closed to the public in 2009 but remains a historic Houston landmark.
