How much did Berlin Brandenburg Airport cost?
Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER) is the principal airport for Berlin and Brandenburg, built by expanding the former Sch?nefeld site south of Berlin. Construction began with a groundbreaking on 5 September 2006. The opening originally planned for October 2011 slipped repeatedly after problems with building systems, including fire safety; Terminal 1 was cleared for use in April 2020 and the airport opened on 31 October 2020. Germany's federal government reported about ?5.9 billion for BER's first construction phase at opening. This construction figure is not the airport company's total financing requirement or the cost of later terminal expansions. An earlier 2015 forecast put construction for a 27-million-passenger starting capacity at ?5.4 billion. Terminal 1 has 360,000 square metres of floor space; the wider airport also reuses parts of Sch?nefeld.
