How much did Braidwood Nuclear Generating Station cost to build?
Braidwood is a two-reactor nuclear generating station in Will County, Illinois, originally built by Commonwealth Edison and now operated by Constellation. Both units are Westinghouse pressurized-water reactors. Construction began in 1975; the first unit entered commercial service in July 1988 and the second on 17 October 1988. Constellation lists up to 2,386 MW of current station output. In the Illinois Commerce Commission's construction-cost review, Commonwealth Edison's spending was reported as $3.268 billion for Unit 1 and $1.863 billion for Unit 2, or $5.131 billion combined. That is historical nominal construction spending for the two original units, not a present-day replacement cost or the price of later upgrades.
