How much did Bronx–Whitestone Bridge cost to build?
The Bronx–Whitestone Bridge carries Interstate 678 across New York City's East River between the Bronx and Queens. The Triborough Bridge Authority built the suspension crossing in less than two years for traffic heading to the 1939 World's Fair; it opened on 29 April 1939. Its suspended structure is 3,770 feet (1,149 metres) long, with a 2,300-foot (701-metre) main span and towers rising 377 feet (115 metres) above mean high water. MTA's 2024 anniversary account reports a $17.785 million original bridge cost, while its 2014 anniversary account gave $19.657 million. The authority has not reconciled those two historical totals, so neither should be presented as an audited modern replacement price. The bridge remains in service; later deck and approach works are separate projects.
