How much did Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport cost to build?
Built as Friendship International Airport south of Baltimore, the airport broke ground in 1947 and was dedicated by President Harry S. Truman on 24 June 1950. Maryland's 1957-58 state manual records the original airport at a reported $15 million. Its later history is financially distinct: a first modernization phase cost $30 million by 1974, and a $70 million terminal renovation completed in 1979 more than doubled terminal area to 635,000 square feet. The state purchased the airport from Baltimore in 1972 for $36 million, but that ownership transaction is not a construction cost. It now operates as BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport.
