How much does Semmering Base Tunnel cost?
The Semmering Base Tunnel is a 27.3-kilometre twin-tube railway tunnel between Gloggnitz in Lower Austria and Mürzzuschlag in Styria, built by ÖBB since 25 April 2012 as part of the Southern Railway, with both tubes fully excavated by November 2024 and commissioning expected around 2030. The total cost was first put at about EUR 3.1 billion, raised to EUR 3.9 billion in April 2022 after a geological fault zone at Grassberg and to EUR 4.2 billion reported in June 2024, which ÖBB says should stay stable.
