How much did the original Severn Bridge cost to build?
The Severn Bridge is a motorway suspension bridge carrying the M48 across the River Severn between South Gloucestershire in England and Monmouthshire in Wales, with a 3,240-foot (about 988-metre) central span and a total length of 5,240 feet (about 1,597 metres), designed by Freeman Fox and Partners with Mott, Hay and Anderson as contract engineers. Built over about three and a half years from 1961, it was opened by Queen Elizabeth II on 8 September 1966. In the House of Commons debate of 6 May 1992 ministers said it was built at a cost of GBP 8 million, a charge on the Consolidated Fund, while repairs had cost GBP 83 million by September 1991.
